With the removal of 2014 Darwin Cup champion Saturday Sorcerer from the final field on Tuesday, talented local Gamblin’ Guru has claimed outright favourite for the 2014 Balaklava Cup, currently available at generous odds of $3.80, ahead of Longshoreman ($6), Justify That ($6.50) and Extra Virgin ($8) at Ladbrokes.com.au.

Will Gamblin’ Guru justify favouritism and win the 2014 Balaklava Cup, or will one of his talented rivals find the line in the clear?

1st

Gamblin’ Guru ($3.80)

A notable performer in major events through the 2014 Autumn Carnival, Leon Macdonald-trained Gamblin’ Guru will leave from the ideal barrier 2 and is more than a chance of success in the Listed Balaklava Cup. Steadily building in form over two minor events at the beginning of his 2014 campaign, the New Approach gelding was unlucky to fall during the running of the Listed CS Hayes Memorial Cup (1600m) on March 10th, but amazingly continued to work well and produce exceptional results in the weeks following; finishing second in the Adelaide Galvanising BM90 (1600m) before claiming back-to-back  victories in the Listed Port Adelaide Guineas (1800m) and Group 3 Chairman’s Stakes (2000m); returning to the paddock after finishing fourth in the Group 1 SA Derby (2500m). Finishing fourth in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) first-up on August 23rd, all signs point towards a return to the winner’s circle this afternoon.

2nd

Justify That ($6.50)

Charging home to win the Penny Edition last time out, Justify That has so-far received the greatest market share of wagers for success in the 2014 Balaklava Cup; cutting in from opening odds of nearly $10 to currently register as $6.50 market mover. Securing a commendable total of eleven race wins and 15 minor places from 53 competitive starts, Justify That has hit exceptional form this season; finishing third in the Listed Oakbank Stakes (1100m) first-up and will be aiming to secure an impressive fourth consecutive win this afternoon, having taken out two Morphettville races over 1400m prior to his Penny Edition triumph. Charged with overcoming the reasonably wide and awkward barrier 10, the King Of Prussia gelding has been confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey Libby Hopwood in the Balaklava Cup.

3rd

Albonetti ($21)

Also carrying winning form into the 2014 Balaklava Cup, Albonetti is offered a great chance at continuing her perfect campaign start this afternoon from barrier 4 and arguably offers punters the best value for money at $21 odds to win, or $5.90 to run a place. Without doubt facing her biggest test to date in the Balaklava Cup, jockey Ben Claridge has been charged with taking the ride.
