Cavaloce has returned to racing in smart form this time and remains an outright $4.80 favourite in 2016 Balaklava Cup betting markets with leading online bookie Ladbrokes.com.au, ahead of Big Memory ($5) and Jim’s Journey ($7).

Will Cavaloce justify favouritism and win the 2016 Balaklava Cup, or will one of her talented rivals post an upset?

Petrology ($9)

Multiple stakes winner Petrology undoubtedly offers punters the best value for money at current 2016 Balaklava odds of $9 and should prove too strong from the ideal barrier 4, with only 56.5kgs in tow. Taking out each of the Listed TV Stakes (1800m) and Group 2 Sandown Guineas (1600m) most notably in 2014, Petrology took a few runs to get going this time, but was unlucky to finish a close second in the Listed Winter Championship Final (1600m) on July 9th. Having placed fourth in the VRC Member Allen Aylett Handicap (1700m) last time out on August 6th, Petrology should relish four weeks between runs and is a great each way bet this afternoon.

Cavaloce ($4.80)

Cavaloce has returned to slick form since transferring to the care of Will Clarken this time, and is a leading chance of a first three finish in the 2016 Balaklava Cup. Taking out a pair of Morphettville minor races over 1200m and 1400m respectively upon resuming in July, the daughter of Testa Rossa ran a handy fourth in the Group 3 Spring Stakes (1200m) on August 6th before placing third in the Listed Penny Edition Stakes (1400m) last time out on August 20th. Cavaloce will undoubtedly require some luck in running this afternoon from barrier 5 but is weighted particularly well at only 54kgs.

Lightinthenite ($34)

Darwin-based galloper Lightinthenite has returned to racing in typically smart form this time and is simply over the Balaklava Cup odds at his current price. Winner of the 2015 edition of the Darwin Cup (2000m), Lightinthenite resumed this time for fourth in the Chief Minister’s Cup (1600m) on July 9th, before a luckless run for seventh in his defence of the Darwin Cup. Having trialled well at Gawler on August 19th, Lightinthenite will carry only 55.5kgs in the Balaklava Cup 2016.
